Endometriosis - A Hidden Cause of Infertility

Endometriosis is a disease affecting women during the menstrual cycle. Much is understood about the process of the disease however little is known as to the exact cause. Endometriosis literally translates from Greek as ‘inflammation inside the womb’. Endometriosis is often mis-diagnosed as severe pain during menstruation was considered a “curse of being female” and overlooked by most medical doctors.

Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue that lines the uterus, grows outside of the uterine cavity in the pelvic cavity, on the ovaries, in the fallopian tubes, behind the uterus or on the bowels or bladder. As the endometrial tissue grows, it develops into non-cancerous growths, triggered by hormonal signals, which bleed during menstruation. As these bleed they irritate the surrounding tissues causing lesions, scar tissue and inflammation.

Signs & Symptoms include: Severe, even disabling period pains, heavy flow at periods, Chronic pelvic pain (includes lower back pain and pelvic pain), pain during or after sex, painful bowel movements or painful urination during menstrual periods, premenstrual spotting or bleeding between periods, intermittent periods, ectopic pregnancy, fatigue, allergies, chemical sensitivities and frequent yeast infections

Treatment:
Common forms of orthodox treatment are progesterone creams and the combined oral contraceptive pill. The concept behind these treatments is to alter the oestrogen dominant levels proved as a major cause of endometriosis. With severe cases total hysterectomy is called for thus totally eliminating a woman’s chance to conceive.

Nutrition treatment protocols involve eliminating substances that elevate oestrogen levels in the body such as those containing chlorine or bleaching agents. These include white flour, sugar, table salt, GM foods, tap water and the use of Tampons and bleaches. Increasing the intake of Vitamins E, C, B complex, magnesium and introducing the herbal formulas Black cohosh or Vitex-agnus castus can all increase fertility in endometriosis sufferers.

Women with endometriosis will benefit from choosing healthy lifestyle plans, nutritional supplementation and avoiding oestrogen-enhancing foods and products before embarking on irreversible surgical techniques to combat endometriosis.
